The Beautiful Game at Forest / Terrace Heights

If you have children or grandchildren in soccer you will know that we are right in the middle of the season. Practices are happening and games are being looked forward to. I hope you are enjoying the season as much and I am. Let me share with you some of the observations that I have made over the last month. The first was that a father that does not know much about soccer has decided to signed his son up for the outdoor season this spring. He as read the Beautiful Game and decided that his son might like it. WIN! If this family locks into this game like mine or yours have, we will have a player for life. Secondly, I talked with a grandfather who was guilted/tricked/manipulated into coming out to a game. He expressed to me his sadness of all the past soccer that he has missed. He absolutely loved it and is trying to get a bunch of other retirees and seniors to come out with him. I discovered that these games are so much more fun to watch if you tie yourself to a team. Your emotions ebb and flow with the fortunes of the team. Here is what I would ask: Go find a team that you have a connection to, review its season up to this point and then go cheer them on to the end. You will find yourself thinking about these kids thought the week and you will crave your next fix of the beautiful game. Lastly, I saw a referee on the field having so much fun that... The Beautiful Game at Forest / Terrace Heights - Web only edition

A couple of days ago while I was chatting with some soccer dads in the stands and we were discussing this beautiful game, someone asks me what my favorite part of the game is.  After having thought about it for a few days, I have come to understand that it's the 'tone' of the game that attracts me the most.

In outdoor soccer, the tone of the game is authored by the lone ref who controls all aspects of the game, from the behaviour of the spectators to disciplining the players.  This commanding figure is part of the game, but seeks no influence over it.  He brings with him many officials or helpers who form his team.  He hires, trains, mentors and employs this team, but they still only advise him, because he is king.  This means that there are not dozens of officials "scurrying" around the field offering their own opinions and getting in the way of the play.

My favorite example of this “setting the tone” is how the referee controls the playing time.  In too many sports

The Beautiful Game at Forest / Terrace Heights - Web only edition

Welcome to the new season.   By the time this article gets out, Forest/Terrace Heights will have 5 teams engaged in a powerful struggle against all the other teams in the capital region.  We have U6 and U8 teams that are really fun to watch.  These little players play their hearts out and bring an inner excitement out in all of us.  We also host a U12Boys team.  This team has had a core group of kids and coach for 4 seasons now and are making real strides.  This is a fast, smart team that maybe a big handful for any team.  They have a couple of strong keepers, a solid defense and the fastest offense around.  We have a U16 Girls team that again have been with the same coach for several years.  They always bring the A game and keep high in the standings.  Lastly, we are sponsoring a U16 Girls Storm team that has years of elite experience and have seen national level action.  This will be a fun team to watch.  I am going to try to get to some of there games and I will report back. As I said in a past column: "I hope that the people of Forest/Terrace Height would come out to encourage this huge group of dedicated athletes. What these young warriors need is sidelines full of cheering fans encouraging them on to victory. They offer the price of sweaty shirts and sore feet so we need to match in sore voices and big smiles. See and hear you out there."

The Beautiful Game at Forest / Terrace Heights

As I sit in the lunchroom listening to people talk about their slate of Sunday "football" games, I realized that what they love was the competition, not the game itself.  They spent way more time talking about who beat who and who covered the spread; what they didn't talk about was the athleticism of the events.

As is always the case with me, we got into a heated discussion about which is the better game.  One of their main arguments is that soccer is too slow.  The ball moves around, but very slowly with only occasional burst of action.  Some how they gloss over the fact that most of a NFL/CFL event is people walking on and off of the field than actually playing the game.

The draw of this spectacle is the pattern of: plan an attack, execute the attack and repeat until success or admission of defeat.  I understand this.  This is easy to watch and immediately gratifying, but what it lacks is the development of strategy while under attack.  How easy is
