Car Broke Down - Need Money Fraud Alert

During the month of December 2007, on a couple occassions, different people reported being asked by a man for money. The man indicated that his car broke down and needed some money to have it towed. This was not the case. If you are asked for money at the CIBC or the liquor store, do not fall for this hoax.

Door-to-Door Fraud Alert

It has happened in our neighbourhood - be aware so you do not become a victim!

A woman has been going door-to-door claiming she has locked her keys in her car and needs cash to have a locksmith open it for her.  She claims to be a new neighbour, and will give an address a few houses down from yours.  She gives details such as perhaps you've seen her walking her golden retriever in the neighbourhood, and describes her husband who she says you may also have seen in the neighbourhood.  She says she will return the money to you as soon as she can get to her purse.  She can be very convincing.

Do not be taken in by her story!  She has taken-in many kind-hearted people in our neighbourhood.  The police can only arrest her if she is caught in the act.

Call Police at 423-4567 immediately if you are approached.

Garage and Vehicle Protection

Garages are popular targets for burglars.

  • Keep curtains over garage windows so thieves can’t window shop or check to see if your car is there.

  • Install an inward swinging, solid-core door with a deadbolt on attached garage doors.

  • Use a good padlock for the garage door and keep it locked , even if you are at home.

  • If you have an automatic garage door opener, customize your remote to ensure that you are the only one who can open your garage.

  • Do not mark your keys with your name and address.

  • Keep garage opener with you. A stolen car can lead to a home break-in.

  •  If you are leaving a key with a parking attendant, leave only your ignition key.

  • Do not leave documents (insurance, license, etc) in car when not driving. This identification could be stolen and used in other crimes (fraud, home burglary).

Most vehicle thefts are a result of owner carelessness. Follow these rules to avoid vehicle thefts:

  • Close windows, lock doors and never leave keys inside the vehicle.

  • Place valuables in the trunk; do not leave credit cards in your cars.

  •  Mark your vehicle’s stereo equipment with your license number and keep a record of all vehicle serial numbers.

  • Never hide a spare key under the carpeting or over the sun visor.

  • Park your car in well lit areas.

  • Do not leave your car unattended with luggage, skis or bikes on roof rack.

If your vehicle is stolen:

Notify the police immediately and provide the following information: vehicle identification and license number, year, make, color, and distinguishing marks (dents, accessories, etc).
